Business Secretary Peter Kyle has commented on a far-right protest. The minister said the scale of the “Unite the Kingdom” march showed free speech is “alive and well.” He was speaking on Sky News. Far-right activist Tommy Robinson organised the demonstration. Kyle also condemned the violence against police officers that occurred. Police estimated between 110,000 and 150,000 people attended the event. The Met Police reported 24 arrests for various offences, including common assault and affray. Kyle stated moments like this protest are “klaxon calls” for politicians. They must “redouble our efforts to address the big concerns” of people across the country. He specifically noted immigration as a major public concern.

Questions Raised About Peter Kyle’s Ethics and Judgement
Peter Kyle faced further questions on his judgment. He defended Peter Mandelson’s controversial appointment as US ambassador to Sky News. He explained Mandelson’s “singular talents” made the appointment “worth the risks.” This occurred despite warnings during the vetting process. Those warnings concerned Mandelson’s links with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted child sex offender. Kyle rejected the claim that Mandelson was appointed before security checks were completed. He stated the Cabinet Office had undertaken an independent inquiry and presented information to the prime minister. However, Kyle also told the BBC it is “highly unlikely” Mandelson would have been appointed “if we had known the information we know now.” The Liberal Democrats are now calling for an independent investigation. They want to know what was known about Mandelson’s friendship with Epstein at the time of his appointment.

Additionally, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage faces his own controversy. He is currently facing calls to explain who paid for his trip to the US. A report suggests he might have breached parliamentary rules. Farage allegedly failed to register a visit where he headlined a fundraiser for Donald Trump.
