MI6 Launches New Recruitment Drive Targeting Spies in Russia

By Isabelle Wilson-

MI6 is officially launching a new dark web portal to recruit spies for the UK, in a bold and unprecedented move.
The secure messaging platform, named Silent Courier, aims to boost national security by making it easier for the intelligence agency to recruit potential agents in Russia and around the world. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said that “as the world changes, and the threats we’re facing multiply, we must ensure the UK is always one step ahead of our adversaries.” The portal is a significant step forward in modernizing intelligence operations.

The new portal is accessible from today and provides a secure avenue for individuals to submit sensitive information. That information can relate to terrorism or hostile intelligence activity. Instructions on how to use the portal—including recommendations to use trustworthy VPNs and devices not linked to users—will be available on MI6’s verified YouTube channel.

An Unprecedented MI6 Recruitment Strategy

The outgoing MI6 chief, Sir Richard Moore, is set to announce Silent Courier and confirm details during a speech in Istanbul today. Moore has previously called on Russians to spy for Britain, and he is expected to state in his speech, “Today we’re asking those with sensitive information on global instability, international terrorism or hostile state intelligence activity to contact MI6 securely online. Our virtual door is open to you.” This marks the first time that MI6 has established an official presence on the dark web for this purpose. The approach echoes a similar initiative launched by the CIA in 2023, which also published videos on social media to target potential Russian spies. The agency is now embracing digital shadows to counter state threats.

The launch of the portal is a clear signal that MI6 is adapting to the realities of modern espionage, which relies increasingly on technology. The secure, anonymous nature of the dark web allows the agency to reach potential assets in countries where they might face significant risk. The MI6 recruitment drive is aimed at individuals who wish to provide information but do not want to risk being identified. The use of a public YouTube channel for instructions also shows a new level of public engagement for the traditionally secretive agency. The initiative is a testament to the evolving landscape of global security. The new platform represents a fundamental change in how the UK is prepared to engage with potential sources of intelligence.
