NATO Member Poland Scrambles Jets After Russian Attack on Ukraine.

A massive, coordinated Russian missile and drone barrage struck multiple regions across Ukraine overnight on Sunday, October 5, killing at least five civilians and injuring more than ten people. This extensive aerial assault, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported involved over 50 missiles and approximately 500 attack drones, caused significant damage to critical infrastructure.

Consequently, the neighbouring NATO member, Poland, immediately took defensive measures to secure its airspace from potential incursions. The Polish Operational Command posted on X that Polish and allied aircraft had been scrambled to operate in their airspace.
Additionally, ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems were raised to the highest state of readiness. This preventative move followed reports of missiles and drones raining down on the Lviv region, which is situated just 70 kilometres from the Polish border.
The western Ukrainian city of Lviv and the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia bore the brunt of the deadly overnight strikes. In Lviv Oblast, four people were tragically killed, and several others were wounded, according to the State Emergency Service.

An industrial park in the city of Lviv was set ablaze following a missile and drone strike, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed, stressing that the site contained no military targets. The attack left parts of the city without electricity and forced a temporary shutdown of public transport, with the mayor advising residents it was “dangerous to go out into the streets.”
Another person was killed and at least ten injured in a separate, late-night attack on Zaporizhzhia, the regional governor Ivan Fedorov reported. Residential buildings and industrial enterprises were hit in the city, causing widespread damage and sparking fires.
Furthermore, this intense bombardment resulted in power outages for tens of thousands of customers in the southeastern region. Notably, the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest, has been without external power since late September, adding to the region’s vulnerabilities.Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent weeks as winter approaches, a clear strategy to plunge the country into darkness.
President Zelenskyy condemned the brutal attacks, stating that Russia once again specifically targeted infrastructure essential for the normal life of the Ukrainian people.
He further demanded stronger protection and faster implementation of all defence agreements, particularly on air defence, to neutralise the aerial terror.
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War note that Russian forces appear to be stockpiling ballistic and cruise missiles to conduct a few large-scale, combined strikes intended to overwhelm Ukrainian air defence systems (for more analysis, see the Institute for the Study of War’s latest assessment).
The decision by Poland to scramble jets after Russian attack activity near its border reflects a growing alarm across Europe over the risk of the conflict spilling into NATO territory.
Prior incidents, including the downing of a suspected Russian drone over Polish territory and widespread drone sightings causing chaos at various European airports, have put NATO on high alert.
The ongoing large-scale Russian aerial campaign continues to destabilise regional security, demanding a robust and unified defensive posture from the Western alliance.Poland’s military stressed that the actions of its and allied aircraft are preventative, aimed at securing the airspace and protecting its citizens from any cross-border threat.
