The Metropolitan Police confirmed a total of 492 arrests after a silent vigil was held in Trafalgar Square by the group Defend Our Juries.

The vast majority of those detained—488 to be precise—were arrested for the serious offence of supporting a proscribed organization, specifically the activist group Palestine Action.

This mass show of civil disobedience was deliberately staged to challenge the UK government’s decision to classify Palestine Action as a terrorist organization in July this year.

Protest organizers refused to cancel the event following Thursday’s fatal attack at a Manchester synagogue, which claimed two lives and heightened communal tensions across the country.

The demonstration began shortly after 1 p.m. with an estimated 1,000 people seated in the square, many holding signs declaring, “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.”

As soon as these placards were displayed, officers moved in swiftly to begin the lengthy process of mass arrests. Police officers detained protesters ranging in age from 18 to 89, highlighting the wide cross-section of people willing to risk a criminal record under the Terrorism Act.

Witnesses reported onlookers shouting “shame on you” at the police as activists were carried away without resistance.

The remaining arrests were for minor offences including being drunk and disorderly, common assault, a public order offence, and an unrelated outstanding warrant.

This significant number of London Palestine Action arrests marks one of the largest single-day arrest totals in recent memory, a stark indication of the deeply polarized public mood.

The organizers, Defend Our Juries, stated the vigil aimed to protest the proscription while the names of Palestinian children killed in the conflict were read aloud.

They openly condemned the attack on the Jewish community in Manchester but maintained that cancelling a peaceful protest would be a concession to terror.

However, the decision to proceed drew widespread condemnation, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging protesters to call off the event to “respect the grief of British Jews.” Jewish communal figures criticised the action as “phenomenally tone deaf” coming so soon after the synagogue terror attack.

The Chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, Paula Dodds, expressed profound frustration over the relentless cycle of protests, stating that officers are “emotionally and physically exhausted.”

Therefore, the police’s operational concentration should be on heightened security against terrorist attacks, not on facilitating these persistent demonstrations, she argued.

The scale of the London Palestine Action arrests pulls critical resources away from protecting synagogues and mosques at a time of heightened alert.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has indicated that the government is considering new powers to target repeated protests, allowing police to consider the “cumulative impact” and order regular demonstrations to move to a different location.

This move follows an intense period of pro-Palestine protests and the substantial number of London Palestine Action arrests.
