Manhunt Underway After Sean Middlebrough Prisoner Abscondment From HMP Wandsworth

By Ben Kerrigan-

Police have launched a major manhunt after Sean Middlebrough Prisoner Abscondment, a Palestine Action protester, failed to return to jail following a temporary release. The 32-year-old was being held on remand at HMP Wandsworth in south London but was granted bail by a judge specifically to attend his brother’s wedding.

Mr. Middlebrough, charged over an alleged plot by activists to disrupt the London Stock Exchange by chaining themselves to the building, did not subsequently return to the prison as required. His failure to return marks the latest in a string of embarrassing security episodes for the justice system, fueling public anger and political scrutiny over prison management.

Palestine Action, the group Mr. Middlebrough is affiliated with, was formally proscribed as a terrorist organization earlier this year, adding another layer of controversy to this incident. While the government quickly distanced itself from the release decision, a spokesperson confirmed that “court decisions are made by judges—independently of government.” They emphasized the seriousness of the situation, adding that “absconding is a serious criminal offence, and any defendant who commits this crime could face longer behind bars.”

However, the sheer proximity of this failure to other recent prison mistakes suggests deeper, systemic vulnerabilities within the UK’s custodial estate. The incident has intensified the pressure on the Justice Secretary to demonstrate effective control over the system.

The Sean Middlebrough Prisoner Abscondment follows closely on the heels of three high-profile mistaken prison releases that have occurred in just the past two weeks. The number of such errors has risen dramatically, creating a significant point of political vulnerability for the government. There were 262 instances of prisoners being wrongly released between March 2024 and March 2025, which represents a massive 128% increase from the 115 instances recorded in the previous 12 months. This sharp increase in avoidable errors underscores a systemic failure in administrative checks and balances across the prison estate.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy addressed the mounting crisis on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, admitting the number of prisoners who have been wrongly released has risen under the current administration. She insisted the government is actively “gripping” the prisons crisis, calling the rising error rate “unacceptable.” She sought to reassure the public by stating that Justice Secretary David Lammy has made a high-level senior appointment specifically “to make sure we really grip this” administrative failure. These comments highlight that the Sean Middlebrough Prisoner Abscondment and the mistaken releases are not isolated incidents but rather symptoms of a wider institutional problem demanding immediate, centralized action.

HMP Wandsworth has unfortunately become a flashpoint for these recent lapses. The Sean Middlebrough Prisoner Abscondment follows a major mistaken release from the same facility just days earlier. Fraudster William Smith, 35, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth on November 3rd, though he later mitigated the embarrassment by turning himself in on November 6th.

More seriously, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian sex offender, was also released in error from HMP Wandsworth on October 29th. Kaddour-Cherif had legally entered the UK but had overstayed his visit visa, meaning deportation proceedings had been initiated before his mistaken release.

Kaddour-Cherif’s release occurred just five days after the high-profile mistaken release of migrant sex offender Hadush Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford in Essex. Kebatu, who came to the UK illegally before sexually assaulting a child, was subsequently jailed, recaptured, and deported.

Sky News filmed the dramatic moment Kaddour-Cherif was finally detained on Friday, November 7th. The repeated mistakes at Wandsworth, culminating in the Sean Middlebrough Prisoner Abscondment, demand an immediate, comprehensive review of the prison’s protocols and staffing levels. The series of events suggests that the checks designed to prevent both mistaken releases and abscondment are fundamentally broken, raising critical questions about public safety.
