Great Manchester police revealed that a white Mercedes car was stolen from a home in Eccles early this morning after an intruder broke into the property and stole the keys. Not long after, just before 2am, two men drove the same vehicle down the entrance ramp to the car park at Middleton Police Station before being obstructed by the gates security fob system. When they realised they could not gain entry, the driver attempted to reverse out and drive away.
The thieves try to enter the car park, and police approach from behind
Unfortunately for the dumb thieves, the vehicle was blocked by two police vans that approached from behind. Thinking that they had been rumbled, the driver drove up a grass verge before both men jumped out the car and ran off.
The men ran towards a nearby bridge and jumped into a river, wading their way through and heading towards Middleton.
Police officers and a dog were dispatched. A 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old man were later arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and a section four road traffic accident offence. They remain in custody. It seems the men did not know they were driving into a police station, but that was really, really dumb! They must have been very high on some hard drugs and perhaps drunk too.
The unfortunate victims of the car theft were lucky to get their vehicle back, and perhaps should thank the crooks for being so dumb.
