Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland has pulled off a major upset. She won gold in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The Kambundji 100m hurdles victory came in a new national record time of 12.24 seconds. The 23-year-old was not a favorite coming into the race. She beat both reigning world and Olympic champions on her way to the top of the podium. An overjoyed Ditaji Kambundji burst into tears after realizing she had won the race, an achievement she initially did not believe was possible. The surprise victory caused her to exclaim, “It’s crazy,” after seeing her name at the top of the scoreboard.

Kambundji herself appeared to be in shock after crossing the line. She later admitted she was surprised by the win. Her performance highlights a remarkable turn of form after a disappointing season. The feat victory marks Switzerland’s first-ever gold in the event. She defeated Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan and the U.S.’s Grace Stark. Kambundji claimed the gold medal with a national record of 12.24, edging out Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan (12.29) and the USA’s Grace Stark (12.34).
