LONDON — Noni Madueke silenced his critics and helped usher in a new era for Arsenal, putting in a standout performance in a dominant 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. The win came despite a petition signed by over 5,000 fans earlier this summer opposing the winger’s transfer to the club.

Madueke’s impact was immediate, with the player repeatedly taking on and beating defenders. His performance was a key element of a near-perfect day for the title challengers, which saw multiple new players shine. The win was a resounding response to the recent narrow defeat to Liverpool and a clear signal of the team’s depth and newfound confidence.
Manager Mikel Arteta was full of praise for his squad, highlighting the contributions of new players like Eberechi Eze, who provided a stunning assist, and Viktor Gyokeres, who scored with a poacher’s finish. Midfielder Zubimendi was another star, scoring twice to mark the first brace of his career.

Arteta’s tactical decisions were also vindicated, including the choice to rest Declan Rice and start Mikel Merino, who was in a “high emotional state” after scoring four goals for Spain during the international break. Despite the comprehensive victory, there was a moment of concern as captain Martin Odegaard was forced to leave the pitch after falling on his shoulder. However, the team’s depth was on full display, with young talent Ethan Nwaneri stepping in seamlessly.

Speaking on his squad’s expanded size and depth, Arteta noted the increasing demands of a long season with parallel campaigns like the Champions League. “They have to play 70 or 74 games throughout the season. It’s never been done,” Arteta said. He emphasised that the team needs more players with higher standards to maintain their performance and that squad rotation is a necessary part of the new era.
On the other side of the pitch, Nottingham Forest’s new manager, Ange Postecoglou, was in a completely different situation, having only had two days to work with his team. When asked how long it would take to see his “Angeball” style, Postecoglou was direct: “It won’t be months, it won’t be weeks, it’ll be Wednesday. This is not a project.”
The victory solidified Arsenal’s position and demonstrated a newfound pace and rhythm. In the words of Madueke, the team looks ready to “go for it.”
