The London Fire Brigade deployed 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters to the multi-storey car park on Montfichet Road, where several vehicles were ablaze on an upper level. The fire produced a substantial amount of smoke, prompting officials to advise people to stay away from the area.
Images shared on social media by those inside the shopping centre showed shoppers being evacuated. The incident also affected West Ham supporters who were heading to the nearby London Stadium for a football match against Tottenham Hotspur.
The fire brigade, which received the first of 35 calls at 4:05 PM, successfully brought the blaze under control by 5:54 PM. The cause of the fire is now under investigation. As a precaution, the entire shopping centre was evacuated.
