Former loved heavyweight boxer, Frank Bruno, has revealed a ring comeback at the age of 54. Bruno, who briefly held the WBC heavyweight title said that he has been training in preparation for boxing fight after over two decades away from the ring. He told ‘this morning’:
“I’ve been in the gym all the time, that’s why I want to come back into boxing,” “I’m going back into boxing as well.”Asked whether that would be a good idea, the 54-year-old continued: “I haven’t got a choice. I train every day.”I can’t sit down and let these so-called promoters say Anthony Joshua can knock me out in two rounds when I’m not even dead.”
Bruno has suffered from mental health problems in recent years after being diagnosed with bipolar, and may further jeopardise his health by coming back. It is hardly conceivable that he will beat any decent heavyweight out there now, though he may be intent on surprising everyone. He will surely be able to bash a few bums, but the likes of Derek Chisora, David Haye, Anthony Joshua, Dillian Whyte, will all batter him to embarrassing submission
It is not a wise idea to come back at this age, and there will be much presumption that his return is motivated by financial issues. Bruno will definitely need a license from the British Board of governors who will have to examine any case for his return very carefully and professionally. If he is granted a license, his return will certainly draw lots of viewers who would want to see the spectacle of a boxer in his 50’s return to the ring. George foreman re- captured the heavyweight title at 45 years of age, and Evander Holyfield continued boxing until 50, though amassed a number of defeats that were a far cry from his achievements in his hey day. Perhaps Bruno has a new record he hopes to set.
