THE EVIL OF HEROINE ADDICTION ON OUR STREETS

BY LUCY CAULKETT

Heroine addiction is destroying its victims in a way that is disturbing and heart rendering.

This is nothing new, and has always been the case. One addict spoke of the pain of the addiction and the suffering associated with withdrawal symptoms whenever they try to go ‘cold turkey’ in order to beat the drug.

Insisting on anonymity, the man called Mr A from Romford told eye of media ” I feel like I will pass out if I don’t get a fix when I did one. I’ll do anything to get the money to buy my fix. Many times, I have to steal to fund my habit. I’ll steal any and everything, from goods in shops to goods in people’s homes. Mr. A also revealed that he does a lot of begging to support his habit, claiming this to be one of the most effective ways to gather enough money to support his habit.

He never tells them he wants to use the money for heroine , ”that will be stupid”, he says. Instead he claims to need money to travel home or to buy something to eat. ”I make up to £50 on a good day, you get people giving me £5 at a time, sometimes £10. Most of the time it is little change like 20 p or 50p, but it all adds up. I wish I never started it, but now I am hooked”. I have two regular dealers, who always alert my phone to remind me of their supplies. Sometimes I don’t have enough credit to even text back but I’ll always find a way, even if it means asking a friend or even a stranger”.

Heroine addiction distorts the physical looks of addicts and practically ruins their lives. Most addicts have no job and very low education. For the dealers, this is a lucrative business for them. They are simply supplying the expensive demands of their customers. However, this is as dangerous a business as it can get. Dealers fight and even sometimes kill over the territory of their customers as more dealers try to compete for customers in the same territory. The worse off are the addicts trapped in a habit they got themselves into.

The most disturbing reality about this addiction is that it is widely believed to be physical. In other words, will power is limited in its ability to overcome the addiction. However, there are those who have gone cold turkey and beaten the addiction. Most addicts are given methadone as a substitute for the drug, but this is limited in its effect. The eye of media has begun widely researching this addiction to see if there is any possible way to beat it with determination, so we can see how we can help. We need to remove this evil from our midst.
