Court Officials Arrested in Turkish Drammatic Crackdown

By James Simons

Turkey’s High Court has arrested 188 members of the Constitutional Court in the wake of Friday’s attempted coup against the Turkish government.

140 members of the Constitutional judiciary, and 48members of the Council of State were arrested yesterday as part of the crack down on the judiciary in relation to the failed coup. Jurists were also detained in the crackdown. The decision to arrest them was made at an important meeting held  by Turkey’s High Council of Judges, where it was determined that the officials arrested had played  illegal roles in the attempted coup.court

265 people were killed according to figures released by the Turkish media, including 104 pro coup demonstrators. The militants had seized the TRT state Television, where they declared a state of Marshall law.

Turkish Prime Minister, Binary Yilderim said 2,839 soldiers had been arrested for their roles in the plot. They will now face the wrath of the Turkish justice system. The mass scale arrests if Court Officials is the first of its kind in Turkey.

The latest arrests are an embarrassment to the judicial system in Turkey, who should be upholding the law, not breaking it. However, it also raises questions about the credibility of the Turkish government. Why would so many high ranking court officials collude against a government unless they question the integrity of that government.

The world was in suspense last night as the ugly drama unfolded in Turkey, where several airports where closed and much disruption to airlines occured. The Turkish president was in hiding during thee high Dramma in Friday. This country has alot of internal work to do.
