Venezuelan President Pleads for Peace as Trump Authorizes CIA Operations Marking Drug War Escalation

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro(pictured) has strongly accused the United States of attempting a coup following the approval of CIA operations by President Donald Trump aimed at tackling alleged drug trafficking.

Mr. Trump confirmed his decision, first revealed by The New York Times, while emphasizing large quantities of drugs were entering the US from Venezuela, often transported by sea. The US has recently targeted several vessels it claims are drug boats, generating questions about the legality of such actions under international law. Washington also accuses President Maduro of connections to trafficking, a claim he vehemently denies.

The US has targeted a number of what it claims are drug boats in recent weeks, despite questions over whether such action is within international law. The United States accuses President Maduro of connections to trafficking, an accusation which he flatly denies. The confirmation of expanded CIA activity and aggressive military strikes indicates a serious Venezuela drug war escalation.

The President of the United States indicated that the administration had established control over the sea route for narcotics. “We are looking at land now, because we’ve got the sea very well under control,” he stated regarding future action.

When questioned about using the Coast Guard, the longstanding US method for intercepting suspected drug trafficking boats, Mr. Trump dismissed the approach as ineffective. He maintained that Venezuela drug war escalation was necessary, observing, “I think Venezuela is feeling heat.”

The President declined to answer questions about whether the CIA held the authority to execute Mr. Maduro. Washington has offered a significant $50 million (£37 million) reward for any information that leads to the Venezuelan leader’s arrest. This reward highlights the severity of the administration’s stance on alleged links between Mr. Maduro’s government, drug trafficking, and organized crime.

Maduro quickly responded to the comments on Wednesday evening, challenging the US action. “How long will the CIA continue to carry on with its coups?” he asked. The Venezuelan President contended that calls for regime change strongly resembled “failed eternal wars” previously fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. Maduro delivered a direct message to the American people, speaking in English: “Not war, yes peace. The people of the US, please.”

The diplomatic tensions confirm a significant Venezuela drug war escalation. Trump also alleged that Venezuela had deliberately sent a significant number of prisoners, including individuals from mental health facilities, into the US.

He did not specify the exact border through which these people reportedly entered the country. The US has consistently pursued a strategy of aggressive containment against the Maduro government.

The aggressive approach taken by the US military involves direct, lethal force. On Tuesday, President Trump announced that America had targeted a small boat suspected of drug trafficking in waters off the Venezuelan coast, resulting in the deaths of six people. All fatalities were aboard the vessel, according to the president’s social media post.

This marks the fifth such fatal strike in the southern Caribbean, as the Trump administration continues to classify suspected drug traffickers as unlawful combatants subject to military force. War Secretary Pete Hegseth authorised the strike, which Mr. Trump described as a “lethal kinetic strike” conducted in international waters targeting a well-known smuggling route.

The black-and-white footage of the operation, released by Mr. Trump on social media, showed a small boat that appeared stationary on the water. It was struck by a projectile from above and quickly exploded, drifting while burning for several seconds. An increased US military presence is now evident in the southern Caribbean, including at least eight warships, a submarine, and F-35 jets stationed in Puerto Rico.

Commentators suggest this level of military action is a dramatic and risky expansion of US counter-narcotics strategy. Critics argue that these strikes, framed as blows against “narco terrorists,” enter murky legal territory. International law typically requires proof of an imminent threat, which the White House has yet to substantiate, making this Venezuela drug war escalation controversial.
