By Ben Kerrigan-
Tony Blair, UK ex pm, has told a French radio station that Britain may stay in the EU.
Tony Blair’s comments came during an interview with French radio station, Europe 1, in which he said that in the run up to the referendum, majority of the public were misinformed about the nature and form Brexit would take.
He stated that it was like changing homes without seeing the other home. His comments followed a report from the electoral reform society (ERS) stating that the referendum was riddled with “glaring democratic deficiencies in which voters were left feeling ill informed and alienated from the major decision process.
Tony Blair minced no words in expressing the view that he did not agree with David Cameron’s decision in calling the referendum, stating it was not necessary.
However, Cameron made the referendum promise as part of his manifesto to appease euro skeptics when he came into power with the coalition government.
The failure of the British government to curb growing and uncontrolled immigration put him under pressure to promise for a referendum. But he was not compelled to, he did it of his own volition.
And despite Theresa May’s rhetoric that Brexit means Brexit, there have been threats from lawyers to derail any plans to invite article 50 without a parliamentary debate.
May has emphasized that nothing will prevent Brexit from being implemented eventually, demonstrating her intention by placing Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary- a decision that caused much disapproval and bewilderment among domestic politicians and across the pond.
