Burkini Ban Rightly Overturned in France

Burkini Ban Rightly Overturned in France

By Ben Kerrigan-

The Burkini ban has rightly been overturned in France by the Nice administrative court.

The burkini  swim wear ban put in place on August 19, was established as an opposition to any clothing that exhibits an adherence to religion at a time when places of worship have been a target of terrorist attacks in France.

burkiniOnly recently, the country’s highest administrative court,  Le Counsel d’etat, suspended a Burkini ban imposed by the Southern town of Villeneuve in Loubet.

The original ban was excessive even in light of the terrorist attacks in France, because it serves no proper purpose. Th e swim wear covers the entire body,  but not the hands or face.

Had it been the traditional burka which covers the face from view, there would have been a more legitimate case for debate.

Meanwhile, the British government made its stance known that it has no plans to impose a ban on religious clothing, as this would be contrary to the rights of people to dress as they please.

Modern citizens are expected to respect the rights of people to dress as they please. What is not acceptable is the imposition of religious views  or fanatical ideologies on the public.

France has traditionally been mightily opposed to the practice of religious freedoms in recent years, especially when it comes to the Islam faith.

Islam is unpopular in the western world, and it is the prerogative of citizens to accept or reject any religious beliefs that is not in accord with their views.

This  right cannot in a civil society entitle any government to suppress people’s rights to practice their beliefs in their own private way.
Lawyers for French groups hailed the decision a victory for religious freedoms.
