Teenagers who witness serious stabbings suffer from flashbacks and may require serious counselling.
A research conducted by the Eye Of Media.Com in North West London reveals that most teenagers who witness stabbings are plagued by flashbacks. Teenagers from Kilburn and Harlesden who have witnessed stabbings said it had affected them greatly in the aftermath of the stabbings.
A research into the street and drug culture revealed that 22 out of 40 teenagers between the ages of 14 and 19 had witnessed a stabbing. 18 of them said they had suffered serious flashbacks as a consequence of the experience. 15 of the 18 said the flashbacks were recurrent and traumatising.
The research was sparked after a few gang members told The Eye Of Media.Com during a research about post code wars and the drug culture in North West London.
After a few teenagers spoke of their experiences of having several flashbacks, after witnessing brutal stabbings. It also emerged that some of them had to undergo counselling, whilst some didn’t pursue counselling. The revelation first revealed in January 2018, led to a broader research among teenagers in the area. Teenagers in some of the schools and colleges were surveyed, with further interviews arranged with some teenagers on phone.
Some teenagers admitted witnessing serious stabbings which they had not revealed to police, because that would be ”snitching”. None of the teenagers agreed to be named in this article. One teenager told the Eye Of Media.Com that he had suffered nightmares every month for over a year for a stabbing he witnessed. He refused to even be quoted on his experience, as he consciously left out exact scene of two stabbings he had witnessed in a year.
Some told the Eye Of Media.Com that murderers who stabbed their victims suffered terrible flashbacks. One anonymously told The Eye Of Media.com that murderers they had known who got caught had spoken of suffering recurrent flashbacks and nightmares. ”One guy I know who is now in jail for murder said he would see his victim every time he shut his eyes and tried to sleep.
He would say ”fxxxx, I can’t get that dxxx out of my head. He is haunting me. He even claimed to sometimes see the ghost of his victim in his room and in his dreams”. The finding is not one that would normally occur to most regular citizens to whom the world of stabbings is a far cry from their more sophisticated lifestyle or the surroundings of law abiding members of citizens.
The research also showed that drugs was the reason for most stabbings and shootings in London followed by disputes over girls, including cheating or making advances to a girl in whom a rival gang member was interested in. Post code disputes followed that. The research is expected to contribute to future recommendations in addressing street crime in London.
