Reform Leader Nigel Farage “Not Racist” Says PM as Trump’s “Sharia Law” Comment Dismissed as “Nonsense”

By Ben Kerrigan-

Sir Keir Starmer made his clear defence of Nigel Farage’s personal character during an interview with Sky News political editor Beth Rigby.

The Prime Minister firmly asserted, “No,” when asked if he thought Mr. Farage was a racist, adding, “nor do I think Reform voters are racist.”

Instead, Sir Keir suggested that supporters of the Reform UK party are primarily “concerned about things like our borders,” feeling “frustrated about the pace of change” within the country.

He meticulously explained the distinction, saying he was “talking about a particular policy” when he previously used the term “racist.” The policy in question, announced by Reform earlier in the week, proposes to strip some legally residing migrants of their right to remain in Britain.

Sir Keir’s office has consistently condemned this specific plan as being both “racist” and “immoral,” arguing that such a move would drastically “tear our country apart.”

The Prime Minister’s comments immediately drew sharp criticism from Mr. Farage, who, in a column for the Daily Mail, accused Sir Keir of being “unfit to be the prime minister of our country.” Mr. Farage claimed Sir Keir’s condemnation of the Reform policy would “incite and encourage the radical left” and potentially threaten the safety of Reform members and supporters across the nation.

Trump’s Sharia Law Claim Dismissed

Crucially, the Prime Minister was also challenged on his response to an inflammatory statement made by President Donald Trump during a recent UN summit. While criticising the London mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, Mr. Trump claimed that London was moving towards “Sharia law,” a reference widely viewed by critics as Islamophobic.

Sir Keir refused to categorise Mr. Trump’s remarks as racist despite repeated questioning on the matter. He maintained his position, stating, “I have been really clear that the idea that in London we’re introducing Sharia law is rubbish.” The Labour leader chose to describe the claim as simply “nonsense.”

Ultimately, Sir Keir Starmer praised Mayor Khan, calling the mayor’s performance “a very good job,” but simultaneously pointed out that he maintains a “very good relationship” with Mr. Trump.

The London Mayor previously labelled Mr. Trump “racist, sexist, misogynistic.” This political tightrope walk highlights the delicate diplomatic and political balancing act the Prime Minister is attempting to maintain.

Furthermore, Sir Keir consistently refused to engage in discussions about whether statements made by other political figures, including the former US President, are racist.

The Wider Context of Division and Dangerous Rhetoric

Reflecting on the broader political climate, Sir Keir refused to call Nigel Farage “dangerous,” instead focusing on the ideas the Reform leader represents.

He emphasised that the upcoming election is a crucial moment that “is going to define us as a country for years to come.” The Prime Minister strongly suggested that “taking our country down the road of toxic division” is dangerous for the United Kingdom.

Sir Keir contended that leaders who prefer “toxic division” often avoid fixing national problems because they risk losing their reason to exist politically if issues are resolved.

This current debate around immigration policy, as reported by The Guardian, shows a growing ideological chasm in British politics. It is apparent that the Prime Minister is aiming to isolate and delegitimise Reform UK’s policies without granting its leader the political capital of a personal attack.
