A new poll from Ipsos for the PA news agency indicates that the British public has little interest in the appointment of the next archbishop of Canterbury. According to the survey, almost three-quarters of respondents, a striking 74%, stated that they do not care about the identity of the new church leader. This sentiment extends to practicing Christians as well, with 62% of those identifying as Christian expressing indifference. The poll results suggest that the public is more concerned with pressing issues such as the rising cost of living and global conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

The survey also provided insight into what Britons expect from the new archbishop’s role. A significant portion of the public, 28%, desires the new leader to speak less about political topics. In contrast, only 17% believe they should become more politically vocal. More than half of those polled said that the next archbishop of Canterbury should address homelessness and poverty. A third of respondents also expressed a wish for the new leader to promote charitable causes more actively than their predecessors. Regarding immigration and asylum, opinions were mixed. Nearly 37% found it acceptable for the church leader to discuss these matters, while 25% considered it unacceptable.
The Role of the Next Archbishop of Canterbury
The findings of the poll underscore a public desire for a shift in the church’s focus. People want the next archbishop of Canterbury to prioritize social issues and charitable work over political commentary. This preference reflects a growing divide between traditional religious institutions and the concerns of modern society. The data suggests that for the Church of England to remain relevant, its leader must engage with issues that directly affect the daily lives of Britons.
