The visit carries significant historical and spiritual weight, as King Charles is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, the institution that historically separated from Rome centuries ago. This rescheduled engagement follows a trip earlier this year that had been postponed due to the failing health of Pope Francis.
A key element of the visit, as announced by Buckingham Palace, is the royal couple’s participation in the celebrations for the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year. This special Holy Year is traditionally held every 25 years and is focused on themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and pilgrimage.
The theme for this Jubilee is “Pilgrims of Hope.” By joining the Pope in this observance, the King and Queen are publicly affirming the shared Christian heritage and values between the Anglican and Catholic faiths..
The Palace has explicitly stated that the visit will “celebrate the ecumenical work by the Church of England and the Catholic Church,” reflecting the King’s personal, lifelong interest in inter-faith dialogue. The King has consistently prioritised building bridges between different denominations and faiths since his accession.
This State Visit to the Vatican powerfully communicates that desire for togetherness, underscoring the spiritual and diplomatic importance of cooperation on global issues that both the Crown and the Holy See champion, such as peace, justice, and environmental stewardship.
The Pope Leo visit comes months after the royal couple held a private, last-minute audience with the late Pope Francis in April, shortly before his death. They expressed being “deeply touched” by the kind remarks of the former pontiff.

Now, Charles and Camilla will formally engage with Pope Leo, who became the first American-born Pope following his election in May. This diplomatic interaction emphasizes the modern, respectful relationship between the Holy See and the British Monarchy. Further details on the specific itinerary and engagements will be confirmed by the palace as the date approaches.
A major component of the state visit involves the King and Queen joining the Pontiff in celebrations for the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year.
The Jubilee, also known as a Holy Year, is a special year of grace, forgiveness, and pilgrimage traditionally observed every twenty-five years. Joining this major event provides a powerful visual demonstration of unity across Christian traditions.
The visit builds on other recent gestures of goodwill, such as the King and Queen’s attendance at the first modern Catholic funeral for a member of the Royal Family earlier this month. The strengthening bond between the two churches remains a central theme of the King’s early reign.
The upcoming visit in late October marks a crucial diplomatic and religious engagement for the King and Queen. The core purpose is the King’s first official audience with Pope Leo XIV, who was elected in May following the death of Pope Francis.
Although the royal couple met privately with the late Pope Francis just weeks before his death, the State Visit was postponed due to the pontiff’s failing health. This rescheduled trip ensures that the British Sovereign, who is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, can establish a direct relationship with the new head of the Holy See.
This meeting is a potent symbol of modern reconciliation. It reinforces the warm, constructive ties that now exist between the two institutions, which were fractured by the Reformation almost 500 years ago when King Henry VIII separated the Church of England from Rome.
The King’s attendance at Westminster Cathedral earlier this year for the Requiem Mass of the Catholic Duchess of Kent was a notable step, and this Vatican visit continues that commitment to Christian unity.
