The legal defeat recently suffered by the parents of Madelinne McCann was inevitable when one closely examines the facts.
The medical qualified couple lost their libel case a couple of days ago to claim damages from ex police chief, Gonzola Amearal’s, for his damning book against them alleging they faked the disappearance pf their daughter in 2007.
The English couple recently threatened legal action to anyone in the UK caught selling the book of ex-police chief, Gonzalo Amaral’s. The McCann’s sued the police office for libel, following a book claiming that the English couple faked their story of how Madeline disappeared in Portugal in 2007.
However, the officer won the Libel case and is likely to put the grieving Mccann’s family through heart ache by claiming compensation for financial costs and harm to his reputation. The compensation bill is estimated to run into hundreds of thousands of euros.
Portuguese legal sources say the compensation bill could run into the “hundreds of thousands of Euros”.
Amaral was initially instructed to pay the McCanns £360,000 after penning a book claiming they were responsible for Madeleine’s death- a large amount the couple vowed to spend in the hunt for their missing daughter.
The distraught couple are taking the case to Portugal’s Supreme Court to have the last word on whether Amaral should pay damages.
COMPENSATION
The ex-officer’s lawyer Miguel Cruz Rodrigues waisted no time in announcing plans to sue the McCanns, a few hours after the surprise libel U-turn.
He stated: “We are going to advance with a compensation claim against the McCanns. My client has suffered years of prejudice and losses.”
