A Libyan man has been arrested for the murder of a police officer 31 years ago. PC Yvonne Fletcher was gunned down in 1984 whilst policing the Libyan Embassy during a demonstration there.
And police have for the first time released dramatic new footage surrounding the senseless murder, after announcing the arrest of a man due to ”significant developments”.
The video shows the moments before and after the 25-year-old was gunned down outside the Libyan embassy in 1984. This is the first time the Metropolitan Police has released footage of the incident, where one of its own officers was killed.
A number of demonstrators gathered behind a metal cordon in the square then fell to the ground after a loud bang is heard, dropping placards and collapsing on top of each other.
A global Facebook campaign for witnesses, the largest the Met has ever carried out, has also been launched. The arrests were made at separate addresses in London and south east England. All three remain in custody and searches are under way across the country.
COUNTER TERRORISM
It was released hours after counter-terrorism officers arrested a Libyan man in his 50’s in the south east of England on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. PC Fletcher was shot in the back as she policed demonstrations outside the embassy. Today’s developments do not come with any promises or even degree of likelihood that those arrested would be charged.
A £50,000 reward has been offered for any information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Shots were fired twice at anti Gaddaffi protesters, after Fletcher got it twice in the back.
