London Mayor Sadiq Khan has hit out at the government’s’shambolic’ handling of A Level results saying that because of it, an entire generation of young Londoners face an uncertain future.
The Mayor’s attack comes in the wake of the uproar about this year’s downgraded A level results in the Uk.
Mr Khan tweeted: “Today young Londoners received their A Level results in the most unprecedented circumstances. I know every single pupil has worked incredibly hard – you should be extremely proud of yourselves
“Unfortunately, we can’t ignore the fact that young Londoners face an uncertain future because of shambolic government decisions. We know from experience that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds will be hit the hardest by these decisions. That worries me deeply
“Young Londoners need clarity. It’s vital that the government provides clear information on the process for contesting grades to ensure every pupil receives a mark which reflects their effort and ability.”
Education secretary Gavin Williamson said details of the appeal process will be released today.
Ian Bauckham, who is on the board of Ofqual and chief executive officer of the Kent-based Tenax Schools multi-academy trust said:
“Any statistical model, however well intentioned it is and however good the overall outcomes are, is going to produce anomalies,” he said. “What we’ve got to do is to drill down and think about individual students and make sure that they have got routes to correct things that are wrong. That is now in place. They should not suffer. They should get the grade corrected if there are grounds for doing so.
Only yesterday, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer described the idea of using mock results was “deeply flawed and a ”fiasco”. Sir Starmer said the opportunity for students to go on to higher education and apprenticeship was being jeopardised.
