IBF super middleweight champion, James Degale, successfully defended is title for a second time on Saturday.
He beat mandatory challenger, Rogelio Medina by a unanimous decision in Washington D.C. Degale, who had 1 loss from 22 fights showed his superior qualities for much of the fight, cleverly evading punches from his determined opponent and slipping off the ropes to avoid attack.
However, the Londoner at times appeared over confident and began to allow Medina to become a bit of a handful as the challengers confidence started to grow as he never gave up the idea of dethroning the champion as he mounted a sustained level of pressure on the Londoner whose only loss was the controversial one to George Groves Degale looked a risk taker in his overconfident display from time to time, one that could have had crushing consequences had Medina been able to capitalise on them.
Degale is a 2008 Olympic gold medallist who has translated his amateur success to professional glory.
James showed his usual technical ability during the most part of the fight, looking brilliant in spurts but struggling to get rid of his determined rival for quite some time. Medina was a tough opponent, always coming forward with the intention of causing damage, but Degale was the better man, and won a unanimous decision in a hard fight, though one he probably made harder for himself.
