Doctors and medical staff at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza are describing unimaginable Gaza hospital conditions, with one doctor fearing they could die at any moment. The facility, once a functioning hub of medical care, is now struggling to operate, overwhelmed with an influx of patients and a dire lack of resources. Basic supplies like gloves and soap have run out, forcing doctors to improvise in a desperate effort to save lives. One Australian doctor, Dr. Nada Abu Alrub, who moved to al-Shifa from another hospital, stated that they are “hardly surviving. And hardly able to help anyone.”

The sense of danger is pervasive. According to Dr. Mutaz Harara, the head of the emergency department, fear has driven both patients and staff to flee. He noted repeated attacks on medical facilities, describing them as a “broader policy” of targeting healthcare infrastructure. Tragically, some of his medical colleagues have been imprisoned, tortured, or killed. Dr. Nada Abu Alrub confirmed that multiple strikes have hit directly outside the hospital’s main entrance. The belief that international doctors would be protected has proven to be false, leaving everyone who stays to accept the risk of being killed.
The Dire State of Gaza Hospital Conditions
The director of al-Shifa Hospital, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, faces a personal tragedy alongside the professional nightmare. His home was struck on a recent Saturday, and the bodies of six of his relatives, including his brother, were brought to the hospital while he was on duty. This poignant example underscores the immense personal cost of the conflict for healthcare workers. While some staff members had previously managed to restore operating rooms and other facilities after earlier bombardments, the situation has regressed. The World Health Organization now describes the facility as “an empty shell,” lacking reliable power, water, supplies, or specialist staff. The Gaza hospital conditions are a stark reminder of the humanitarian crisis and the immense challenges faced by healthcare providers in the region.
