Huda Abu al Naja, a -year-old Palestinian girl who had endured months of severe food deprivation, died at Nasser Hospital in Gaza on Friday, according to reports.

The unfortunate death resulted from a “simple infection” which her immune system, profoundly weakened by months of malnutrition, could not fight off effectively, the paper cited.

A Sky News team visited the hospital in July and learned Huda had lost nearly half her entire body weight since March. Her mother desperately recounted how Huda’s needs were minimal: fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and a small amount of meat. Unfortunately, after Israel closed the crossings into Gaza and imposed a sustained blockade, her mother found “virtually nothing to eat.”

Many children on Huda’s malnutrition ward received only dextrose, a basic mixture of sugar and water, due to the extreme scarcity of food supplies. This solution offers no true nutritional value and cannot sustain a developing child. The images of Huda receiving treatment showed the devastating physical toll this deprivation took on her young body.

Speaking in July, Huda demonstrated a poignant self-awareness about her decline. She showed a picture on her tablet, comparing her previous healthy appearance with her current state, stating simply, “The war changed me.” She observed, “Malnutrition has turned my hair yellow because I lack protein.” This brave young girl pleaded for help from the visiting journalists, expressing a desire to “travel abroad for treatment” and wishing only to play and live normally like other children. International organizations campaigned for months to secure her evacuation from the Gaza Strip, Haaretz reported, but they were ultimately unsuccessful.

The heart breaking case of Huda emphasizes a catastrophic humanitarian crisis reported across the territory. Ongoing restrictions on the entry of food aid have created famine conditions in Gaza City, according to the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) and other aid agencies. Mass hunger remains pervasive throughout the rest of the Gaza Strip. Data reviewed from Israeli border officials shows the volume of food entering Gaza has frequently fallen below the “bare minimum” necessary for basic survival, as determined by the UN’s famine-review agency.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, people have died from malnutrition, including children, underscoring the severity of this ongoing Gaza Malnutrition Tragedy. In response to diplomatic pressure, Israel agreed to reopen five border crossings as part of a -point peace plan, aiming to boost the flow of food and other aid supplies. Israel’s defense body overseeing aid, COGAT, announced the daily amount of aid entering Gaza was expected to rise to around trucks starting on Sunday.

Egypt also committed trucks to the effort, with many pictured near the Rafah crossing. These trucks faced immediate difficulty, mobbed by desperate people in Khan Younis, where Nasser Hospital is located. The struggle to deliver aid safely remains critical. The sustained effort to address the Gaza Malnutrition Tragedy continues to challenge international agencies and local authorities alike.
