ESSEX MAN TREVOR CLIFF WHO LOST DAUGHTER IN JAIL DIES OF ALCOHOLISM

BY JAMES SIMONS-

An Essex man who lost his daughter in Holloway prison was found dead on Sunday morning, following a cardiac arrest. 54-year-old Trevor Cliff, who was a regular alcoholic was found slumped by a car park in Southend on Sea. His death is believed to have been caused by alcohol problems.

Cliff, a boxer in his youth, was a known alcoholic who drank day in night out and got into fights regularly. He is believed to have often been a victim of those fights and was prone to responding provocatively in his defence whenever confronted by other drunk youths who often teased him when he was drunk.

A well-known character to the local bobby and the locals in general, he was also a likeable character, who often spoke with a slur in his deep manly voice, especially when drunk. He lost his daughter , Danielle Lawrence, who died in Holloway Prison in what was said to have been suicide, but denied by her mum, Sue, and  stepdad, Trevor.
The eye of media.com were aware of the death when it happened and investigated the death at the time along with The Sunday Mirror, (with whom our editor has close links) who had partnered with us to investigate the story at the time and actually prepared an article ready for publication, but which was pulled down at the last moment, after her mother who had voluntarily given an interview, phoned in changing her mind and insisting against publication, following advice from her friends and family.
We contacted HM prison to investigate the death and the suicide verdict on a couple of occasions but were constantly told that all they could go on was the finding of the investigation. Trevor Cliff , already an alcoholic before his daughter’s death, hit the drink, even more, claiming to have been depressed, and asked the eye of media.com constantly not to give up on finding the truth about his daughter. Cliff and Sue maintained to us that she did not commit suicide, but was attacked by an inmate, and provide recent letters from her to suggest she was looking forward to coming out. We also saw a letter she wrote to her boyfriend at the time, who insisted on anonymity, expressing how much she looked forward to coming out soon.
A dispute between him and his partner, saw him barred from her funeral, a decision that left him deeply sad. Whilst investigating a separate story in the Southend area last Saturday, barely 24 hours before he died, the eye of media.com, saw Mr Cliff in the area and he reiterated his plea for us to find the truth about his daughter’s death. He posed for two pictures, one with his regular can of beer, and another without.
”Please do what you can to find out about my daughter,” he pleaded. Thank you, mate, he said, thanks”.  He gave the eye of media.com the contact of his solicitor, Amber and Clive solicitors in Southend, and told us he had given Anne permission to disclose any paperwork they had about his daughter.
However, when we called Anne today she told the eye of media.com ” our contact with him was purely connected to criminal defence, not his daughter. I was aware of a message that you will be calling, but I know nothing about the investigation into his daughter’s death, she said. Unfortunately, most of the time we spoke to him he was drunk and incoherent”.
A south end local told the eye of media.com ” Trevor was a well-liked man who loved his drink but was also very friendly. He was known and liked by a lot of people. The death of his daughter hit him hard, especially the fact he fell out with her mother shortly before then. The way he died is really sad.
Danielle Lawrence, 24, was jailed for assaulting her mother, Sue Lawrence, in a drunken rage in 2013. Her outraged mother called the police and shopped her, and her being jailed sadly led to her untimely death.  That death put Mr Cliff in a great depression that led to a man with an alcohol problem drinking even more. The eye of media.com send our deepest condolences to the family of Trevor Cliff and pray that his soul rests in perfect  peace.
The eye of media.com will look closer into the investigation of the death of Danielle Lawrence in honour of Mr Cliff’s death.
