Highly celebrated British wartime Prime Minister,Winston Churchill claimed the white race was superior when he was in power in the 1930’s.
Anti- racist Protesters defaced the statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Westminster during highly charged protests, adding the words “was a racist” to the memorial. Their actions have sparked condemnation from the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, who vowed they will face justice.
Churchill, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, when he led the UK to victory in the Second World War, was one of the most prominent Prime Ministers Of the Britain.
Born in Oxfordshire to an Aristocratic family of British and American parentage, he was a well accomplished individual who won several accolades for his exploits. Mr.Churchill was also known to be a brilliant speaker who well admired for his high intellect.
Notwithstanding, Mr.Churchill made a number of strong racist pronouncements that explains the level of anger that led to the defacement of his statute by protesters. Violent destruction of statutes in Britain is illegal, and the culprits are currently sought after by police.
During his time as Prime Minister, Churchill referred to British imperialism as being for the good of the “primitive” and “subject races”.
In 1937 he said: “I do not admit, for instance, that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia. I do not admit that a wrong has been done to those people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, or, at any rate, a more worldly wise race, to put it that way, has come in and taken their place.”
Mr Churchill is also quoted as once saying : “I hate Indians…they are beastly people with a beastly religion.”
He also referred to Palestinians as “barbaric hordes who ate little but camel dung”.
His strong choice of words have been held against him by anti racist campaigner who feel it is an insult for his statute to be erected in his honour.
Extreme anti-racist protests in the UK were sparked after a video revealed a police officer, Derek Chauvin, a white policeman, knelt on the neck of George Floyd’s for almost nine minutes while he was being arrested in Minneapolis on 25 May.
The killing led to worldwide protests across the United States, calling for an end to police brutality. Some of the protests also led to violence and clashes between the police and protesters.
