The case of British cybersecurity expert, Marcus Hutchins has been delayed, after his lawyers applied for more time to make further presentations.
The decision to delay the case was to provide his lawyers with more time to prepare arguments aimed at convincing a judge to suppress implicating statements he made after his arrest. Hutchins was arrested for allegedly creating software to steal banking passwords. He was eventually charged with the offence.
23-year-old Marcus Hutchins, pleaded not guilty after his arrest last year in Las Vegas before he boarded a flight home to England.
Once heralded as a hero for stopping the WannaCryworldwide computer virus, U.S prosecutors accuse Hutchins created and distributed malware known as Kronos and made incriminating statements to FBI agents after his arrest and in two phone calls.
Details of those phone calls were revealed for the first time in court filings on Wednesday night. They provided Hutchins’ defence with new transcripts of the conversations.
Hutchins’ lawyer, Brian Klein, told a federal magistrate judge prosecutors intended to present those calls in court on Thursday to “make assertions about what he said and the significance of those” conversations. However, the case was rescheduled for May 16,
Only a few months earlier, Hutchkin was lauded as a cybercrime-fighting hero for finding a “kill switch” to slow the outbreak of the WannaCry virus. The virus crippled computers worldwide, encrypting files and making them inaccessible unless people paid a ransom.
Federal prosecutors publicly revealed details of those phone calls for the first time in court filings on Wednesday night and provided Hutchins’ defence with new transcripts of the conversations.
Hutchins’ lawyer, Brian Klein, told a federal magistrate judge that prosecutors intended to present those calls in court on Thursday to “make assertions about what he said and the significance of those” conversations.
The hearing was rescheduled for May 16.
Hutchin’s friends and family have been deeply worried about his hot legal case, but his fate lies in the hands of the judge come May,
