By Aaron Miller-

The USA Boxing has introduced a ‘Transgender Policy’ in its rulebook, allowing male boxers who transition to fight in the female category starting from 2024.

The governing body, overseeing America’s amateur and Olympic-style boxing, has outlined specific conditions under which transgender athletes can compete, marking a significant step towards inclusivity and fairness in the sport.

Under the provision, boxers under the age of 18 must continue to compete based on their birth gender, adhering to the traditional approach in youth categories.

Criteria for Transgender Fighters

Transgender athletes are required to meet specific criteria to participate in their chosen category. This includes:

Both male and female transgender athletes must undergo quarterly hormone testing for a minimum of four years following surgery. This requirement aims to ensure that hormone levels align with the regulations set forth by USA Boxing.

Boxers transitioning from male to female must demonstrate that their total testosterone level in serum remains below 5 nmol/L for at least 48 months before their first competition.

This level must be maintained throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category.

Conversely, male boxers must show that their total testosterone level in serum has been above 10 nmol/L for at least 48 months before their first competition and maintain this level through the period of eligibility.

Significance and Rationale

USA Boxing’s decision to implement the Transgender Policy is rooted in a commitment to fairness and safety for all boxers. By introducing comprehensive criteria and testing measures, the governing body aims to strike a balance between inclusivity and maintaining competitive integrity.

This move follows the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) ruling in 2021, which granted each sport and its governing body the authority to decide how transgender athletes can compete without causing a disadvantage to others.

The IOC’s recognition of the need for individualized policies paved the way for USA Boxing’s proactive stance in addressing the participation of transgender athletes.

Potential Impact and Concerns

While the Transgender Policy reflects a positive step towards inclusivity, there are concerns about its potential impact on the sport. Critics argue that the stringent hormone testing requirements may pose challenges for transgender athletes, and there is a need for ongoing dialogue to address any unintended consequences.

Moreover, the policy’s implementation may influence other sports organizations globally, leading to a broader shift in how the sporting community approaches transgender inclusion.

USA Boxing’s adoption of the Transgender Policy is a milestone in the ongoing conversation about inclusivity in sports.  The move opens avenues for discussions on similar policies across various sports and sets a precedent for embracing diversity within the realm of amateur and Olympic-style boxing.
