Shadow minister Sarah Champion did not to resign over criticism about her article on grooming gangs.
The Rothernham MP wrote in the Sun that Britain has a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls.
Ms champion’s article was in relation to a groups from Iranian,Iraqi, Bangladesh, Pakistani, India, and Turkish backgrounds were convicted of raping girls in Newcastle. She said in interviews that such crimes involved predominantly Pakistani men, and fear of being called racist was hampering the authorities investigations.
Ms champion later referred to perpetrators of rape as ”predators”, saying ”this men are predators and the common denominator is their heritage”. These latter words are offensive because of the emphasis put on highlighting the common denominator on their heritage.
However, if it were factually correct that a group of men from Pakistan were habitually being caught for gang rape, no valid offense should result from that. The atrocious case of the Newcastle gang involved defendants from various ethnic groups, making the singling out of those from Pakistani background a discriminatory action.
Had champion, said Britain had trouble with men of Middle East/Asian background, it would have been a factual statement that there is a specific problem Britain needed to deal with in relation to Asian men exploiting white girls. The legitimacy of that statement is supported provided there are no other groups of people from the same race who commit the same offence. Champion’s mistake was failing to distinguish people of Pakistani origin from people hailing from the other countries who were convicted for rape.
SENSITIVE
Ms Champion would have been safer just stating that Britain has a problem with groups of individuals who habitually rape white girls. Such sensitive statement will need to be backed up by fact that there are no other group of girls being raped by those group of individuals. Sensitive statements uttered lightly can be very careless and costly.
The problem arises where outspoken politicians like Ms champion have not thought out the potential implications of their words, making them come on stuck. Ms champion apologized for her ”poor choice of words”, she had failed to consider the bad precedent those words could set.
GEOGRAPHY
Sarah Champion must have thought Iraq, Bangladesh, Iran, and the rest of those countries were all part of Pakistan. This would make her knowledge of Geography terrible, but I suspect what she meant to say was men of middle east/Asian heritage. This would have left her in a strong position of defense, unless evidence could be provided that there were other races who commit the same offence in groups. Stating facts that identify a particular group of people as being guilty of particular types offence, must then add that people of the same background should not be tarnished for it.
RESPONSIBLE
Groups of individuals from every race commit crimes that only they are responsible for. The rest of individuals if similar heritage should not have to be labelled for it when we are all distinctive individuals. The impact categorical statements can have are not always considered when weighing up the facts. They should be, if only to make certain the factual justification for the statement .Once a statement is factual and justified, political correctness becomes irrelevant in its power. Political correctness cannot displace factual reporting, but misplaced facts that can affect a race of people will always be shunned.
PROVE
If Sarah Champion could prove that Pakistani men were a lot more responsible for gang rapes against White girls, her statement would be valid. Without that evidence, she messed up, but should have simply explained what she meant to say, and apologized or the error. If she knew of groups of Pakastani men guilty of rape, she could have said that she had a problem with men from those origins who think it is alright to commit rape.
Sarah Champion was enraged by what she had observed in relation to gang rapes of English girls by men of Middle Eastern or Asian background. She failed to accurately make that point and also say why she whether they were the only groups of people committing that offence.
