Nigel Farage’s ambition to be UK ambassador is illogical because that role is already taken.
Nigel Farage has rebuked Downing Street for dismissing the tweet of President elect Donald Trump, in which Trump said that Farage would be a good ambassador for Downing Street. Donald Trump had tweeted that everybody knows Farage would be a good ambassador for Great Britain- a tweet that reflects either the influence of Farage on Trump, or Trump’s view himself.
Downing Street responded by firmly stating ”there is no vacancy”, as they already have an ambassador: Sir Kim Darroch who took up the post in January. Farage said he is close to the president elect and would be useful in playing an ambassadorial role for Britain in its relationship with Donald Trump, adding that he had known many of the people who would form part of Trump’s administration, for many years.
Farage also said that many people who made negative comments about Farage were now trying to be his friend following his stunning victory in America’s most divisive elections. Fortunately for Farage, he was on the president elect’s good side before the election results, having appeared on stage to support Farage during the elections. However, his good relationship with Trump has not earned him any good points with Downing street.
Nigel Farage’s conduct
The fact remains that Nigel Farage’s conduct is contrary to protocol, and there is no way Downing street would accommodate him, the way he is going about things. Nigel Farage’s ambition to be UK Ambassador is totally illogical because it would be an admission of weakness on the part of the UK government if they were to even consider the option of using an individual not part of their government, and brushing aside their own ambassador who already has his post. Nigel Farage surely knows this but cannot resist striving for a bigger role in politics than his former role of being UKIP leader. However, wanting to be an ambassador for the U.K government does not equate becoming one, neither can the sort of intimidating tactics he appears to be using, be a positive approach to earning any type of respect or role.
Nigel Farage seems to be doing all in his power to compel the UK government to yield to the pressure and the fact he has forged a good relationship with President elect Trump. Sorry love, it doesn’t work that way! There is a process to follow, a way things are done, and that is not the way you are doing it. Theresa May is well equipped in handling her relationship with Donald Trump and does not need the hand of Nigel Farage who seems to be doing more of a stirring job by highlighting continuously unfavorable statements made about Donald Trump when the President elect made very controversial statements during the build up to his election campaign.
The tweet by President elect Trump endorsing Farage was an expression of support and allegiance to Farage who supported his campaign. Downing street should view it as nothing more than that, since it would be out of the ordinary and bizarre for one head of state to advice another so openly on whom they should have in their team.
