girl fighting a rare tumor in her chest since she was 10-years-old, has undergone a miraculous 5 hour surgery.
The huge tumor estimated at 3.2 kg, w sat in the middle of her chest compressing one side of her lungs and heart causing deformity in the chest wall.
She was diagnosed with the rare disease of Mediastinal Teratom a Mediastinal Tumor, wherein Mediastinal is the cavity that separates lungs from the rest of the chest.
Her consultant, Dr. Kakaya Kumar, told the eye of media.com ”This is a very rare case”.
“The CT scan showed a huge tumor occupying the right lung, right plural cavity pushing the heart further to the left. This was a complicated high-risk case and required skill and precision to perform such a surgery in the thorax region to remove the tumor located between the heart and the lungs,”
“It arises from the Pluripotent or Embryonic cell trapped during developmental stages… But for cases like this there is no alternative treatment except surgery,” he added.
This kind of tumor resection was conducted using Cardio Pulmonary Bypass machine in M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Das said.
“In this case also we had kept this as a back-up option,” he said.
The family of the girl had endured plenty of heart ache in their past attempts to achieve an operation, with many surgeries quoting unaffordable figures to them. Some were fearful of the attending risks of an operation on a tumor not much was known about in the medical field.
However, she has a new life now and can live life to the fullest. Rare tumors or illnesses/diseases of any sort are a source of psychological pain to its sufferers, causing them low self esteem, and endless cycles of depression. Successful operations like these are to be celebrated.
