BY CHEMELLE RICE

British singer, Taylor Swift has announced that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. The Grammy Award winner,   went on Tumbler today to announce the unfortunate news, urging her fans not to take the deadly disease lightly but instead have regular checks.  Entitled ‘Just So You Know’, she explained that her mum, Andrea Finlay went to get screened for health issues over the Christmas period last year,  and after a long wait the Pennsylvanian’s family were told the devastating news after receiving the dreaded results.  The bad news she broke was accompanied with a request to keep more ‘personal aspects’ of her mum’s illness private. The precise nature of the cancer that has befallen her mother has not yet been disclosed.

Cancer, which is a malignant tumour  involving abnormal cell growth  with a dangerous potential to invade other parts of the body is caused by many potential factors. It is commonly understood that the cell itself is in all human but develops into cancer when triggered by one of the causative factors of this deadly killer.  According to research  by  scientists , 22% of all cancer deaths is caused by Tobacco use, with 10% of cancer attributed to poor diet or radioactive exposure.  Less than 1% of all cancers are hereditary with only a few of cancer related illnesses caused by carriers of a genetic mutation with a high cancer risk. In short, 95% of cancers are due to environmental factors such as lifestyle, with economic reasons constituting other reasons that lead to this disease.  Most cancers are preventable by not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, eating as healthily as possible, particularly plenty of vegetables and fruits.

The celebrated singer who only recently topped nominations for this years Billboard music awards, has already been named most popular artist of 2014.  Her consideration for her legions of fans is most admirable because most of us indeed do take life for granted. He heartfelt message to her fans cautions against the sort of negligence that can make individuals and their families procrastinate the important routine of medical checks, be it quarterly, annually or every five years. We echo that caution to our readers by posting her message below to her fans from her personal blog:

“I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you. Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now. For Christmas last year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine. She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it. The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know. She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle… Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.

Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you.

I hope and pray that you never get news like this.

Love you.
Taylor”
