The civil suit was triggered by a tweet about a Whitehall memorial if the second world war with the words Fxxx Tory scum during an anti austerity demonstration, and Hopkins accidentally used Ms Monroe’s Twitter handle, instead of that of another columnist who had tweeted about the incident.
The success of the civil suit suggests that Ms Monroe suffered damage to her reputation as a result if the tweets.
However, Hopkins advocate, Jonathan price, told the court the dispute was ” relatively trivial”, adding that it was resolved within a period of several hours”. They were not defamatory, and Ms Monroe suffered “no lasting harm, and certainly no serious harm”
Lasting or serious harm is not the key consideration in cases of defamation, but whether the victim suffered damage to their reputation as a result of a false statement made . In this critical regard, the judge felt that Monroe suffered such damage, regardless if the claimed error in which it was made.
Hopkins reportedly refused to apologise for the error
She has 28 days to pay the huge sum, which is still being calculated and may exceed the total if £131 already on her bill fee.
