By Danny Benn-
Golovkin proved to still be the best pound for pound boxer when he stopped Kelly Brook- previously an unbeaten and highly rated boxer. He delivered on his promise to rid of Brook, who is still probably the most dangerous boxer of his division.
The world’s top puncher has put many contenders to flight at the very mention of his name. Chris Eubank junior was one of those who was earmarked to face the ruthless fighter, but the fight never materialised. Even though Eubank is a good fighter, he would have been out of his depths against Golovkin
Kelly Brook bravely took the fight with the hope of being the first man to derail the 22 winning streak victory of Golovkin. He believed he would win, at top level, such confidence is expected by real champions. The extra offer of handsome pay is always an incentive, but not when defeat is overwhelmingly staring one in the face.
With Golovkin, that fear is always daunting. Brooks wasn’t scared, and deserves congratulations for that. However, once the fight started it was obvious to see that Golovkin was the higher league fighter. He showed why he is the best pound for pound fighter in the world. This is the kind of leadership the heavyweight division, and some of the other weights. Multiple champions is not ideal for the sport. The heavyweight division needs a clear leader. At the moment Tyson Fury, Deontey Wilder, and Anthony Joshua.
Fury owns the main belts, but both Wilder and Joshua, also have a claim to world title belts. But the world wants to know who the real best is. At the moment, fans are torn between the three but I would say most believe it is between Tyson Fury and Deontey Wilder. Joshua is the most popular and impressive, but he won his IBF title through default.
This is not the best way to become a champion, but the interesting thing is that Joshua carries it well. He was always tipped to one day be world champion, and he did it, but he is still yet to prove to be the best. Golovkin on the other hand, is the undeniable boss of his division, and proved it with style on Saturday. Kudos to Brook for stepping up a few weights to face Golovkin, at least he gave the world a chance to confirm Golovkin’s top position.
Brook put up a valiant opposition, and said after that Golovkin damaged his eye socket in the second round. This is how much of a ferocious puncher Golovkin is. It was his 23rd consecutive defence of his title, as he continues to stretch his longevity at the top of his game. When a barrage of up to 30 unanswered punches was rained on Brook, his corner threw in the towel to save him, so he can live to fight another day.
Amir Khan, who has avoided Brooks for years, was the last man to be battered by Golovkin when he was brutally knocked out several months ago. Brooks was determined to better Khan, but Golovkin is just on a much higher pedastal than these fighters. He is the Usain Bolt of his division. Nobody will beat him; he is just one of those fighters who will always the best. Boxing fans want to know who the best is in every division. They don’t want to be guessing, and that is why the best are expected to fight the best so that we know who is really the best.
Tyson Fury will have to beat Klitschko in their October rematch, if he is to keep up the hype that he is the best. Klitschko will be fighting for that same recognition too, but I don’t see him doing anything different. He is old and robotic, Fury has the youth and desire to make it two in a row at championship level. Then he must move on to beat Joshi=ua or Wilder, otherwise he can’t be the best.
My late father always said ”in life you must aim to be the best”. The world is not interested in second bests”. My brother, Nigel lived by that philosophy, and achieved his goals. Connor has a similar mentality, and this is the drive every professional should have- to leave a legacy.
