Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood Sexual Assault Charges have been officially laid against him, with the 68-year-old facing 15 total charges, including multiple counts of rape and sexual assault against seven different women. Westwood, known for his decades-long career in urban music broadcasting, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday. The appearance marks a significant escalation in the highly publicized allegations that surfaced against the well-known media personality.

The former DJ who recently returned to the UK from Nigeria, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and current address while in the dock. Westwood was not required to enter pleas to any of the 15 charges during this initial hearing. The court was informed that the former BBC figure has voluntarily participated in five police interviews since the investigation into the alleged sexual misconduct began. Previously, Westwood consistently and strenuously denied all allegations of sexual misconduct made against him publicly.
The indictment against Westwood spans four decades and details a wide range of alleged offenses. He stands charged with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault, collectively involving seven female complainants. Crucially, the charges include three specific allegations of indecent assault that allegedly occurred at the BBC studios in the 1990s, raising serious questions about the broadcaster’s work environment during that era.
The specific rape charges include an allegation against a woman at a London hotel in 1996, one count of rape from the early 2000s at an undisclosed London address, and two counts of rape at a London address in the 2010s. The indecent assault charges involve four incidents in London during the 1980s, the three aforementioned incidents at the BBC during the 1990s, and two further incidents in the early 2000s. The charges also include two counts of sexual assault, one against a woman at a nightclub in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2010, and a second at a London music festival in the 2010s. The sheer temporal scope and geographical diversity of the Tim Westwood Sexual Assault Charges underscore the gravity and complexity of the impending trial.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring presided over the hearing and ultimately granted Westwood conditional bail. The specific condition mandates that the former DJ cannot contact any prosecution witnesses while awaiting his trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 8th at Southwark Crown Court, where the case will proceed to the next stage of the judicial process. This development follows Westwood’s departure from Capital Xtra in 2022 after the initial allegations became public.
Westwood had a long and prominent career in British broadcasting, starting in local radio before moving to Capital Radio in the late 1980s. He joined the BBC in 1994, working extensively across both Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra for nearly two decades. After leaving the BBC in 2013, he hosted a regular Saturday show on Capital Xtra, where he was widely known by his nickname, “The Big Dawg.” The serious nature of the Tim Westwood Sexual Assault Charges, particularly those related to his time at the national broadcaster, has reignited wider discussions about safeguarding and accountability within major media institutions.
