Gareth Southgate’s squad excited the whole of England after shaking off a late equalizer by Columbia to win a heart stopping penalty shoot out in Moscow on Tuesday night. The excitement among England fans was intense right across the country even as England convincingly edged past Columbia in their first match in the knock out stages. England manager Southgate said his squad have returned straight back down to business at their Zelenogorsk training base on Wednesday after last night’s atmospheric match. England will not have an easy match against Sweden on Saturday, but the boys are expected to win, and are likely to do so.
England have their best chance to reach the semis and even the finals of te sport’s most exciting sporting occasion. Since the despair of losing to Germany on penalties in the semi-final in Turin at Italia 90, England’s world cup football team have never looked stronger. This surely one of the best England side we have had for decades. It may be too early to dream of winning the entire world cup, but many fans will be dreaming that this be the one time England may be able to do it. All the team have to do is beat sweden on Saturday, and the country may just start really dreaming again.
