Donald Trump has postponed his visit to the UK, previously scheduled for June. The U.S president asked Theresa May to postpone the visit, following concerns from the Metropolitan Police Chief, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe British and the White House about the potential for mass protests to ruin his visit.
The visit is now being rescheduled for October 5-8 to allow time for the heat to calm down. It may also be a strategy to select the winter period where it would be so cold that protesters will be put off. Protest groups are not always going to be put off by cold weather, although it is natural to expect a much larger turnout for protest during a hot summer month than during winter.
With climate change making the world a much warmer place now, the first week of October is not always very cold. What will, therefore, be most crucial is whether the heat has indeed died down by then and whether their objections against Trump and his policies have lessened by then. Protests in Leeds and Birmingham were staged against president Trump only last week, with the chances of those protests being revived very strong whenever he visits Britain unless a shift in perception occurs by then.
President Trump gave a speech at Congress today in which he re-iterated his plans to make America great. There is still a way to go to assess the impact of Trump’s presidency and the world will be watching in day and each week at how things are working out for him and the American people. Trump recently stated that things may have not been properly explained to the American people , and a platform to do so will always be there right before him.
Trump’s tone is generally viewed to be confrontational and unapologetic, but his supporters believe he is the man to change America. Most skeptics believe he is America’s worst nightmare, but time will tell.
