Chris Evans Will Not Face Police Charges for an allegation of sexual assault dating back to the 90’s.
The Metropolitan Police have on Thursday confirmed they will not pursue an investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Radio 2 DJ, and former Top Gear presenter Chris Evans dating back to the 1990s.
Evans was accused of regularly flashing his private part to a female colleague for many years. The woman claimed that reports she made went unnoticed, and she was sometimes groped by the well know radio presenter.
Chris Evans was interviewed by police under caution at an east London police station today. Police later issued a statement saying there was insufficient evidence to pursue an investigation.
A Met spokesman said: “An allegation of non-recent sexual assault was made to police on Monday, 23 May 16. The allegation was made by a woman against a man. It related to incidents in Tower Hamlets in the 1990s.
“The matter was investigated by officers from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.
“Today, Thursday 28 July 2016, a man in his 50s was interviewed under caution by police at an east London police building. The decision was made by the police that there was insufficient evidence to proceed.”
The BBC radio presenter is officially in the clear because of lack of evidence. However, she claims to have made repeated complaints to his bosses at the time of the alleged offences, but no action was taken.
Thursday’s news will have come as a relief to Evans, who may well have known that his accuser had no evidence to support her claims. This, however, is an allegation individuals in Evans position should desperately avoid. Men in well -placed positions are often known to abuse their position of power when it comes to sexual harassment.
It always looks bad when an allegation of this nature is made against a celebrity, though malicious accusers cannot be said not to exist.
However, it is disturbing that a former colleague told website Heat Street that her working relationship took a turn after she refused to sleep with him. She said “Chris wanted an affair with me but I didn’t want to because he was with someone else at the time.
“She sent me to Coventry. He told colleagues not to talk to me. It was
bullying behaviour.
“He often said I was crap at my job and would sometimes grab my breasts. I became totally desensitised to his behaviour.
“He would scream, shout and swear at me if I told him something simple such as reminding him he was due on air in ten minutes.
She felt he regularly flashed his penis at her, making her feel that he did it as a means of punishing her if she didn’t do what she was asked to do. She added that he sometimes walk not a room naked with his erect penis.
The girls feelings that this amounted to sexual bullying if it is true, and if untrue, Evans, ideally should have sued for defamation. He may not have wanted to bother with the legal costs despite his evident wealth. Or perhaps he found it emotionally draining.
However, the allegation did not look good, but at least he is free from any legal consequences of the allegation.
A spokesman for Evans said: “The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the complaint has been investigated, but it fails to meet the evidential test to warrant any further action. The case is dropped.”
Earlier this month it was reported that Evans was to be questioned over allegations dating back to the 1990s in Tower Hamlets.
Chris Evans has denied the claims and previously described the reports as a “witch hunt”. He had faced a barrage of negative press since it was announced he would be taking over as presenter of Top Gear following the departure of Jeremy Clarkson.
After a string of poor ratings for the first series, Evans quit the show, saying he “gave it my best shot”.
