Campaigners For Children Transgender Law Change Urged To Avoid Media

By Sammie Jones-

Campaigners in favour of a law change for children seeking a sex change have been urged to avoid media coverage.

The report put together by the Thompson Reuteurs Foundation  examines laws governing gender recognition, with a focus on young people, in Norway, Malta, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Portugal and the UK.

The report  warns campaigners of a ‘trans-hostile’ cultural climate, stating that ‘many mainstream and right-wing media outlets have given platforms to the voices of trans exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs)

‘These voices normally come from women’s groups who express concern over streamlining the process for legal gender recognition,’ the report states. ‘Their concerns largely include female prisoners and female public toilets.’

The  Global news Foundation Organisation that seeks to highlight  Human Rights Issues  has joined forces with a network of 96 national and local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and student organisations across the Council of Europe region .

Transgender issues have always been controversial; many of its staunch defenders want to see the law favour transgender people without  raising any issues.

The report  puts various countries into classifications  of good, liberal, and progressive.  Belgium, Malta and Norway are highlighted as ‘good practice countries’ with the remaining five qualified as comparators.

The report makes reference to Norway as the most liberal since legal gender recognition being available at any age. The report also makes reference to the UK where trans individuals are forced to undergo a lengthy, complex and expensive process to have the opportunity to change their gender .

The report goes further to urge groups campaigning for Norway-style laws to target the youth wings of political parties and ‘de-medicalise’ the issue.
