CAMERON: SYRIA MUST HAVE REGIME CHANGE AND ASSAD SHOULD FACE INTERNATIONAL COURT

BY BEN KERRIGAN

David Cameron will call for a new diplomatic drive to end Syria’s civil war as he meets world leaders at the United Nations in New York.

David Cameron has expressed his view that Syrian President, Bashar Assad, should face prosecution at an international criminal court, saying that ”people who break international law should be subject to international law”. His comments came as he prepared to meet world leaders at the United nations in New York. He told reporters that Mr.Assad has butchered his own people and was one of the great recruiting sergeants for the so called Islamic State. ”He can’t play a part in the future of Syria and that position hasn’t changed”, he added

Obviously, conversations about how we bring about transition is very important, and that’s what we need greater emphasis on”. UK officials also warned of the complexity to the search of a peaceful resolution created by Russian military build up in support of the Syrian dictator’s regime. Russia have recently moved warplanes, helicopters, tankers, drone, artillery and troops into a military airbase near Latakia and the and the seaport of Tartus in Syria in recent weeks, but Putin’s regime have claimed that the move is merely defensive and meant for protection. Officials widely believe that they need to work with Russia to seek a diplomatic solution.

European leaders are generally convinced of the necessity of a political transition but are pulling their hairs on precisely what process that transition should take. Germany want Assad to be involved in those peace talks, but France’s foreign Minister- Lauren Fabius has called for European leaders to oppose such a plan.

Diplomacy is the most reasonable starting point to securing a regime change, though if Assad tries to prove difficult, force might be the only language he understands. However, leaders will be mindful of creating a situation that spirals out of control and worsens an already bad situation.
