Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the UK’s largest car manufacturer, has prolonged the pause in its global production until at least October 1 after a crippling cyber attack.
The decision provides clarity for colleagues and partners as the company continues its forensic investigation into the incident, which has effectively disabled its IT systems since late August. This severe disruption has stopped the production of new cars, leading to significant financial losses for JLR and widespread turmoil across its extensive supply chain.

The cyber attack forced JLR to shut down its entire IT network to contain the damage. Production was halted at key UK sites, including Solihull and Halewood, as well as at international facilities in Slovakia, Brazil, and India. A company spokesperson confirmed teams are working around the clock with cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement to ensure a safe and secure restart. The focus remains on supporting customers, suppliers, and employees during this difficult time.
The Jaguar Land Rover factory shutdown has also created considerable strain on the wider automotive ecosystem. Many suppliers, operating with a “just-in-time” model, have been forced to scale back or halt their own production.
The disruption has raised concerns about the livelihoods of thousands of workers who depend on the carmaker’s business. In a statement, a government official said the Department for Business and International Trade is “acutely aware” of the difficulties and will work with the company to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. For more information on the impact of cyber attacks on supply chains, see this article from The Guardian.
Reports indicate that the group responsible for the Jaguar Land Rover factory shutdown is an English-speaking hacking collective. While JLR has not provided details on the nature of the attack, it is believed to be a ransomware assault, similar to those that have recently hit other major British businesses.
The incident underscores a growing vulnerability in UK industry to sophisticated cyber threats. As the investigation progresses, the long-term impact on the company and its network of suppliers remains uncertain, but the Jaguar Land Rover factory shutdown is proving to be a costly ordeal.
