Protesters in southern China clashed with police in a show of public opposition to anti-Covid measures, following the extension of lockdowns in the area to over a surge in infections.
Hundreds of protesters have taking to the street in the industrial metropolis of Guangzhou, with some tearing down cordons intended to keep locked-down residents from leaving their homes meant to confine them to their homes, taking to the streets in defiance of strictly enforced local orders.

The toughly implemented policy which sees thousands of residents locked down over just one positive case in their housing complex is said to be frustrating locals who say they are also suffering dire food shortages as a result and protracted delays in emergency health care.

“No more testing,” protesters chanted, with some throwing debris at police.
Another video shows a man trying to swim across a waterway that separates the affected district of Haizhu from the neighbouring area, with passers-by suggesting the man was trying to escape the lockdown.
The district of over 1.8 million residents has been the source of the bulk of Guangzhou’s Covid-19 cases.
A lockdown order covering nearly two-thirds of the district was extended until Wednesday night sparked uproar, after first being ordered in October.
Mandatory mass testing ordered by officials in nine districts last week to curb the which daily case numbers which rose above 1,000 has not gone down well with members of the public.
