American Congresswoman Claudia Tenney has said she cannot watch the U.S Open after Novak Djokovic was “wrongly denied” access to the final Grand Slam of the season. Last Thursday, Djokovic officially pulled out of the US Open after he was denied entry into the United States because of his vaccination status.
“I have been a major fan of US Open Tennis since I got my first yellow ‘Miss Chris’ tennis racket over 45 years ago. I cannot even watch now because the great @DjokerNole has been wrongly denied access to the event,” Tenney said in a tweet.
Djokovic was hoping for the rules to be changed at the last moment, but such hopes also expressed by his supporters and well wishers ignored the fact that millions of others all over the world were also denied the opportunity to enter the United States for various reasons. The 35-year-old is a major doubt to compete as he is currently prohibited from entering the country due to his vaccination status.
Danii Medvedev also added to condemnation of U.S laws that insist of vaccination before entry, pointing to what he considers a contradiction in the law.
“You know that he could not enter the country for whatever reason, because of a different law,” Medvedev said about Djokovic’s situation. “We can say: Does that law make sense? Americans can return without a vaccine. Novak can’t come and he doesn’t want to live in America. He just wants to play a tennis tournament and return home to Serbia.”
The United States Government recently introduced new measures set to relax Covid restrictions regarding time spent in quarantine and social distancing. Djokovic missed out on the US Open after he failed to get a special exemption like the one he applied for ahead of the Australian Open in January, which proved to be famously ill-fated
Djokovic has now missed two Grand Slams in 2022. Earlier this year, Djokovic was denied participation at the Australian Open. After getting deported from Australia, Djokovic said nothing changed in his vaccine views. Djokovic remains unvaccinated and there have been no signs that he plans on taking the vaccine anytime soon.
