HEAVYWEIGHT PROSPECT GETS SEND OFF PARTY
BY GABRIEL PRINCEWILL
Fans turned up in droves to express their support for Alabama heavyweight boxing prospect, Deontey Wilder at a send off party in Tuscolusca Alabama just under a week to his big fight for the WBC title. The hugely anticipated fight takes place at the MGM Grand next week Saturday in Las Vagas. Unbeaten Wilder who has a perfect KO fight record with 32 straight wins assured the attending public that he would not disappoint them, but rather put his native home on the world map by capturing the richest prize in sport when he finally climbs the ropes next weekend.
”I love you guys and won’t let you down, insisted Wilder to the enthused crowds hoping to see America regain the world championship belt for the first time in nearly a decade. The proud Mayor of Alabama said watching Wilder move through the ranks was the proudest moment of his 9 years leading the city. He expressed optimism that Wilder would bring the belts home. His father , who is a Reverend was also in attendance recounted a spell of bullying his son went through as a young teenager by a kid who was insistent that Wilder showed him respect. He said he had to exercise all restraint from urging his son to engage the bully in a fight.
Addressing Wilder with a proud smile, he added ”if I have anything to tell him, it is that the restraints are off. The chains have been loosened around your neck and you are not under my control anymore. All I can tell Deontey is that when you get to Vegas, get him”!
Wilder’s journey through the ranks has been spectacular, though most observers see this as his first real test. The only recipient of a boxing medal in the 2008 Olympics, he has gradually and decisively dismantled all his opponents inside 6 rounds. The build up to his fight against Bernade Stivens- the recently crowned champion from Canada- has been turned on seriously, with the champion recently referring to Wilder as a clown whom he will hurt badly when they meet. The fight airs on showtime at 9pm next Saturday. It promises to be an explosive affair.
