By Aaron Miller-
President Trump has released a campaign-style video, months after the election concluded.
The video comes as president elect, Joe Biden, warned of the “massive damage” being done to national security because of officials’ putting up “roadblocks” for his transition team.
The video, which depicts the White House, repeats his claims of being pro-jobs and pro-armed forces, against the backdrop of the tagline “Trump stands for America”.
The video also featured a Nobel Peace Prize logo positioned over photographs of him with the prime minister of Israel and the foreign ministers of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. It has been viewed over 5 million times, and can be seen as an indication of his 2024 plans to run again for president.
However, more people see it as a mock video of defiance against the outcome of the 2020 election, which he still claims to have been fraudulent, and has managed to convince some Republicans who plan on challenging the vote of the Electoral College which took place on December 14.
The Nobel Prize logo is a reference to the president’s 2021 Nobel Peace Prize nomination by a Norwegian lawmaker. Trump was nominated back in September for his role normalising relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. He did not win.
Suspicions
Mr Trump’s placement of loyalists in key departmental roles in the dying weeks of his presidency has raised suspicions of political opponents, who view those actions in the final weeks of his administration as designed to cause chaos.
Biden has complained that his team was facing “roadblocks” in the defence department and the Office of Management and Budget.
The president-elect described key security agencies as having been “hollowed out” in personnel, capacity and morale.
“The policy processes have atrophied or have been sidelined,” he added, saying that this was “to the despair of our alliances”.
“Right now, we just aren’t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas,” he said.
“It’s nothing short, in my view, of irresponsibility.”
Clear Picture
The president-elect added that his team needed a “clear picture of our force posture around the world” and that US adversaries could exploit any confusion that resulted.
Mr Biden said: “Right now we just aren’t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas. It’s nothing short, in my view, of irresponsibility.”
It comes as Democrats on Capitol Hill have overturned President Trump’s veto of a military spending bill.
Democrats passed a measure to increase Covid stimulus payments from $600 to $2,000.
Trump has thousands and thousands of supporters in America, which could be one of the reasons he is having difficulty in accepting his election defeat.
With the inauguration of Joe Biden, literally weeks away, many Americans are beginning to find president Trump’s actions and obstructions damaging to the reputation of the U.S democracy and constitution.
Commentators and critics see no way back to the Whitehouse for president Trump, but the president and his supporters have not giving up hope and are practically hoping against hope to overturn an election already decided.
