Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has criticised the British government over its new immigration policy.
The points-based system requires migrants looking to come to the UK to be skilled, speak English and be sponsored by an employer. The requirements is music to the ears of most Brexitiers who have long complained that foreigners have been undercutting British born potential employees by accepting below minimum wage deals in exchange for work.
Speaking at Mayor’s Question Time yesterday, Khan said the policy, which comes into force on 1 January 2021, will lead to a shortage of builders to deliver new homes in London.
He said: “We’re in a position where 30 per cent of construction workers are from the EU or outside the UK. We have over 300,000 jobs in London, which are, in inverted commas ‘lower-skilled’, done by EU citizens. The reality is there isn’t a puddle of Londoners who are there to do these jobs.”
Khan added that he was worried the government was “cutting its nose off to spite its face” with the new bill, adding: “We’ll have a real challenge in London at a time when […] we’ve got problems in relation to not having enough homes being built in our city.”
The mayor concluded: “The question I ask the government is, ‘who will care for our elderly, who will build the homes we need, who will work in restaurants and hotels’ if [it] carries through its plans, as announced by the home secretary?
