North Korea’s Threat Of Pre-emptive Nuclear Strike

By Brook Harris-

North Korea has threatened the U.S with a “horrible nuclear strike and miserable and final ruin”, in its latest claim to “destroy the enemies’ bases” with a pre-emptive strike if they show “any slight sign of provocation.”

The strong and provocative rhetoric between the U.S and North Korea is reaching fever pitch, as both sides continue to push the boundaries in their language , allowing limited room for backtracking.

“The DPRK [North Korea], which towered as the most powerful nuclear weapons state despite the unprecedented difficulties and trials, is not afraid of sanctions, pressure and war,” the stubborn and difficult regime said, as cited by North Korea’s state-owned KCNA agency.

Now Pyongyang is ready to destroy “the enemies’ bases with its resolute and pre-emptive strike” if they display “any slight sign of provocation,” North Korea’s official statement read.In case the US opts for confrontation and war… it will meet a horrible nuclear strike and miserable and final

”The DPRK has had access to everything and gained everything it could do despite the harshest sanctions and blockade by the hostile forces, and it is a daydream to calculate that the DPRK can be shaken to change its attitude in face of the new ‘sanctions’,” the statement read. North Korea’s dangerous and most aggressive rhetoric came in response to President Trump’s speech at the United Nations meeting, in which he threatened Pyongyang with total destruction if he attacked the U.S or its allies.

The verbal war between the U.S and North Korea is has reached boiling point, the situation deteriorating with every public declaration made by both sides. Both sides have expressed a willingness to use nuclear weapons in a dispute about the right to possess such weapons, as the strong tensions continue to escalate with no resolution in sight. On Wednesday, China expressed disappointment in the strong rhetoric used by President Trump, arguing that it is unhelpful to the objective of peace being sought. China believes that the language coming from the White House is worsening the tension, rather than resolving it.

Yanmei Xie, -an analyst  of China policy at Gavekal Dragonomics in Beijing said:

“Trump’s bellicose rhetoric does add urgency to how China views this issue,” she said. “But it also reinforces China’s view that both sides are to blame for the tension.”

“Trump threatens DPRK with ‘total destruction’, while China calls for peaceful settlement,” the online English-language edition of the People’s Daily newspaper headlined an op-ed, referring to the county’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“Trump’s political chest-thumping is unhelpful, and it will only push the DPRK to pursue even riskier policies, because the survival of the regime is at stake,” it wrote. Efforts by China to ease the tension between the two sides have hit a dead end, as neither side shows any sign of cooling off the growing hostilities.
