The University of Exeter has suspended a number of law students after an investigation into racist Whatsapp messages.
Screenshots of the comments made in a private group chat were shared on social media by undergraduate law student, Arsalan Motavali in March. The screen shots show members of the Bracton Law Society repeatedly using racial slurs such as n***** and p*** and making jokes about gang rape and incest.
One of the message read: “Blacks are useless tree ornaments,” while another called for a race war.

A spokesperson for the university announced this morning that the investigation, carried out in conjunction with the Students’ Guild, “has now concluded, and the outcomes have included expulsions, suspensions and other significant sanctions. These outcomes are subject to appeal”. The University failed to state what the sanctions were. When The Eye Of Media.Com probed Exeter University further with regards the right of appeal, they said it was procedural rights like in any case.
Exter university said: “Exeter does not tolerate any form of racist, sexist or bigoted behaviour and is committed to eradicating any instances of discrimination and harassment that may arise, a statement from the University stated
“These sanctions demonstrate our absolute commitment to take serious action against those whose behaviour is fundamentally at odds with our commitment to inclusivity,( they mean inclusiveness) tolerance and respect.”
The comments were made public in March when law student Arsalan Motavali – who set up the so-called Dodgy Blokes Soc group – shared screenshots of some of the messages online, prompting an internal investigation by the university.”
“Expulsions and suspensions for them all. Can’t thank everybody who showed support enough, you’re the best,” he wrote on Twitter.
In a statement, the university said: “Following reports of allegations involving a small group of students, the university launched a major investigation, in conjunction with the Students’ Guild.
“This investigation has now concluded and the outcomes have included expulsions, suspensions and other significant sanctions. These outcomes are subject to appeal.
“Exeter does not tolerate any form of racist, sexist or bigoted behaviour and is committed to eradicating any instances of discrimination and harassment that may arise.
“These sanctions demonstrate our absolute commitment to take serious action against those whose behaviour is fundamentally at odds with our commitment to inclusivity, tolerance and respect.
“The university has established a new Provost Commission which has a broad remit to recommend and implement new approaches, initiatives, programmes and policies which will ensure we work continually towards an open, diverse and safe university community for all our students, staff and visitors, under the banner of We are all Exeter.
“It will seek to eradicate racism and all forms of harassment and discrimination from our campuses.
