Windsor Essex County health unit is embarking on a study to help combat and overcome drug and opioid abuse.
Drug and opioid abuse is so widespread in Windsor, and health professionals there are determined to beat it. Crack cocaine use is becoming widespread in the area , causing grave concern for straight and law abiding citizens there. Opioid refers to a group of substances in their physiological or pharmological effects, usualy used to to relieve pain.
Acting medical doctor of health, Dr. Wajid Ahmed , wants a solution that addresses broader issues of mental health, social support, treatment options, and enforcement issues, which will sometimes include supervised injection.

”We are at a very preliminary stage to understand the potential action items needed in our community, he told the eye of media.com. When that happens we will know whether it is a good thing. we are not just looking for a patchwork solution, we are looking for a comprehensive solution so that we can have an effect that is longlasting.
EDUCATION
Increased education and more treatment beds are also being considered to maximise the chances of effective results. The plans are bound to be controversial, and Ahmed acknowledges he will need to conduct a consultation in the community toaddress oncerns about the locations of the sites in the community, and what effects drug possesion may have for them in the legal and criminal context.

Health officials will obviously need to liaise with the local police, but this cannot mean drug users would be encouraged to freely use drugs in the streets just because of their co-operation with the scheme.
TARGET
It will mean police not targeting or searching them on occassions they have gone for an injection. This is because the injection is aimed at tackling their addiction. Unwanted police attention will be counterproductive to the aim of helping them overcome their various addictions. Ahmed also plans fior staff to connect clients with health and social services.
”One these injections achieve a drastic reduction or elimination of the addiction and use, it will save alot of instances of drug overdoses and deaths , Ahmed told the eye of media.com. It will also have the added benefit of preventing the criminal offences drug users commit to sustain their habits.
